The Department of Computer Science (http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/), part of the Science Faculty at the University of Helsinki, is the leading unit for research and education in computer science in Finland. The focus areas of research and education at the department are 1) algorithms and machine learning, 2) networking and services, and 3) software systems. Three national Finnish Academy centres of excellence are active at the department, and the department has a close research partnership with Helsinki Institute of Information Technology (HIIT). In years 2007-2012, the department was elected a national centre of excellence in university education twice in a row. The department employs 170 persons and its total budget is 11 Million Euros. The department disposes of an excellent research infra-structure, including its own 1960-core high-performance cluster.
The Department of Computer Science is looking for a computer science
UNIVERSITY LECTURER
from 1 August 2013.
The sub-field of the position is computational data analysis. The duties of the university lecturer is to carry out research in computer science and to give instruction in data analysis algorithms and their applications, as well as to coordinate the international Master's programme in bioinformatics at the department.
In accordance with the rules of the University of Helsinki, applicants are required to have completed a doctoral degree in a relevant field. Further, they must be able to give good instruction based on research, and to supervise thesis work.
According to university regulations, university lecturers must speak Finnish. In addition, they must have adequate oral and written skills in Swedish. Foreigners or Finnish nationals who were born abroad or did not receive their education in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this language requirement without separate application. English is required for the successful management of this position.
The salary is based on levels 5–7 of the demands chart for teaching and research staff under the university salary system. In addition, an individual supplement based on personal performance will be added to the salary.
